If Chet gets 1 portion of rice, Bjorn gets 2 and Alan gets
4,
so Bjorn gets 2 out 7 portions.
What does Bess get?
Answer
Bjorn gets more than Bess.
Readers' methods
Phil Low, Burnley:
If Cath's and Chet's amounts were the same, then Bess would get
two and a half times as much as Bjorn.
But Cath's amount is only about a quarter the size of Chet's (1
in 31 compared to 1 in 7),
so Bess gets a lot less than Bjorn (about half as much).
Anna:
For the first bag,
Alan = A, Bjorn = B, Chet = C.
A = 2B, B = 2C and bag = A + B + C,
therefore bag = 4C + 2C + C = 7C.
For the second bag,
Alice = A, Beth = B, Cath = C.
A = 5B, B = 5C and bag = A + B + C,
therefore bag = 25C + 5C + C = 31C.
Bjorn receives 2/7 of a bag and Beth receives 5/31 of a bag.
Bjorn therefore receives more.
