One approach is to imagine slicing the 'block' of sand into 1 cm thick
horizontal layers (to be used to 'tile' the lawn).
Each layer has an area of 1 square metre. How many layers are there?
Answer
100.
Readers' methods
Jason R, Cheltenham GL51 5EF.
It takes 100 x 100 x 100 = 1 000 000 1 cm cubes to make a cubic metre of
sand.
It takes 100 x 100 = 10 000 1 cm cubes to cover a square metre.
So the sand covers 1 000 000 divided by 10 000 = 100 square metres.
Graham B, Westbury BA13 4ST:
Imagine the cube in 100 slices of 1 cm thick,
therefore it would cover 100 sq metres.
Adrian T, Loughborough LE11 5EH:
1 square metre = 100 x 100 square cm.
We have 100 x (100 x 100) square cm.
Therefore, we have got 100 square m of sand.
Solly M, Borehamwood WD6:
If the layer of sand is 1 cm thick, that is 1/100th of a metre.
Therefore, 1 cubic metre of sand, 1/100th of a metre in thickness,
will cover an area of 100 square metres.
100 x 1/100 = 1.
