DAY 50

Comment

One approach is to consider the extra cola contained in the bottle: for an extra 3p you get an extra 3 ml cola.
Is this extra cola good value?

Answer

The can is better value.

Readers' methods

Alison P, Welford NN6:
The 333 ml bottle is only (approx) 1 % bigger than the can.
3p is much more than 1 % of 47p,
therefore the can is better value.

M Pryce, Welford NN6:
For the bottle, each additional ml would cost 1p,
so the can is better value because it costs less than £3.30.

Jan C, Bristol BS14:
Cost per ml in can: 47 / 330 = 0.142 ... pence per ml.
In the bottle, the extra ml cost 1p each.
Hence the can is better value.

Joan, msn:
In either the can or the bottle you get lots of ml for every p
- about 6 or 7.
But in the bottle I'm only getting 1 ml for every extra 1p.
So the bottle doesn't sound a good deal.

Hannah B, Chislehurst BR7:
I divided 330 ml by 47p which came to about 7, so 1p buys 7 ml.
Then I divided 333 ml by what it costs (50p) which was about 6.
So for the second bottle 1p buys about 6 ml, which proves that the
first bottle was better value.

Naomi H, S022:
The bottle is 3ml more than the can which is 330ml and the bottle costs 3p more,
but the can doesn't cost £3.30 it only costs 47p so the can is better value.
